Case Study

My experience with this work:

In implementing these techniques into my own life, I have found them to be incredibly useful for dealing with stress, anxiety, and finding much greater ease in my body and my posture.

After the birth of my second daughter in October 2020, I had a pretty severe DRA (4+ finger widths of separation). After five months of diligent Pilates rehabilitation exercises (I have extensive extra education on Pilates and DRA) as well as Ortho-Bionomy® self-care and receiving body work from other practitioners, I was disappointed in my lack of measurable progress- I had only reduced the gap by about 1/2 finger-width (measuring at 4 finger-widths of space) and still dealt with a lot of low-back instability and pain. Because I had started this course around this time, I decided to shift my focus to the techniques from within this training instead my other tools. Within 1 week, my DRA had reduced from 4 finger-widths of separation to 3, and within 6 weeks I was down to 2 finger-widths of separation. I also felt much more stable in my low-back, and my pain had diminished. I was astounded that this could be the case, though I also thought it “made sense.” Many of these reflexes deal with posture and core strength from an unconscious level- perhaps by integrating primitive reflexes, my nervous system could reconnect to my innate core strength and the integrity of tone of the abdominal muscles (in a very different way than i achieved through pilates and active exercise).

I am conducting this case study to see if Neurodevelopmental movement will affect DRA in others as well.

Reflex Integration

Rhythmic Movement Training

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or just to talk more about this work. Believe it or not, most adults have varying degrees or unintegrated reflexes. In many cases one could have integrated reflexes properly in early development, but due to injury, trauma, or illness, the reflexes “reemerge” from dormancy and then affect many aspects of life. Here is a list of some of the effects of unintegrated reflexes:

  • Balance and coordination problems
  • Shrunken posture
  • Fatigues easily
  • Muscle tone usually weak or too tight
  • Sleep disturbances, difficulty settling down to sleep
  • Poor digestion, tendency towards hypoglycemia
  • Weak immune system, asthma, allergies and infections
  • Hypersensitivity to light, movement, sound, touch & smell
  • Shallow, difficult breathing
  • Underlying anxiety or negativity
  • Depression/isolation/withdrawal
  • Constant feelings of overwhelm
  • Easily distracted, difficulty filtering out extraneous stimuli

This is just a small list!  Thus, regardless of whether the DRA changes significantly, all of us can benefit from this type of work!
